Public Welfare Foundation announces grant awards

[From Philanthropy News Digest] The Public Welfare Foundation in Washington, D.C., has announced grants totaling more than $7 million to social justice organizations around the country.

Awarded through the foundation's Criminal and Juvenile Justice, Health Reform, Workers' Rights, and Special Opportunities programs, the grants will be used to help reduce the population of adult prisoners and reform the juvenile justice system, spur rational reform of the healthcare system, and create safer workplaces and better protection for low-wage workers.

Grants include $500,000 to the New York City-based Legal Action Center for a campaign to support federally funded food stamps and cash assistance for people convicted of drug-related felonies; $450,000 to the Oakland-based National Center for Youth Law for efforts to reform the juvenile justice systems in Arkansas and Wyoming; $300,000 to the Washington, D.C.-based Center for Community Change for a federal jobs program and to advocate for permanent solutions to the unemployment crisis in low-income minority communities; and $200,000 to the National Academy for State Health Policy in Portland, Maine, to address health policy issues in eleven Southern states. In addition, the foundation awarded general operating support grants to the Denver-based Partnership for Working Families ($400,000); the American Rights at Work Education Fund in Washington, D.C. ($250,000); and the Public Assets Institute in Montpelier, Vermont ($100,000).
